Non Fiction

Hi! Sorry its been so long since my last post, but I've been traveling in Italy and just got home. I was thinking about a question to ask you:
What is your favorite non fiction topic to read about?
I enjoy reading biographies and autobiographies about famous people. Its interesting to me to learn about other people's lives.

Favorite Author

Who is your favorite author?

Hmmm...I don't think I could choose just one favorite....

Roald Dahl- He has been one of my favorites since I was 10 years old! He has such a zany, quirky sense of humor and imagination. I've read everything he's ever written, and my favorite is probably Boy, his autobiography.

Mo Willems- The author of Knuffle Bunny and the Elephant and Piggie series really understands what is funny to kids. His illustrations are unique and unlike anyone else's. I would love to see him write books for older kids.

Jeff Kinney- This guy is just plain hilarious!! The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series are seriously funny- and I think would be as funny to a 7 year old as a 70 year old! The books are filled with short, quick scenes that help the book move along at a fast pace. He is a genius.

Choose a Genre

Hi Guys! I hope you're enjoying your summer! Right now I am listening to "The Lightning Thief" (Percy Jackson) on Playaway. It is awesome! When I finish it, I will share my full review!!

Question: If you had to choose ONE genre of book to read forever, which would it be?
Oh this is a tough one! If I could only read one type of book, I think it would be....Science Fiction. I love how a good Science Fiction book will explore the future and the possibilities of things to come. It really gets my imagination going! A science fiction book that I recommend is The True Meaning of Smek Day by Adam Rex.

The True Meaning of Smek Day
It all starts with a school essay. When twelve-year-old Gratuity ("Tip") Tucci is assigned to write five pages on "The True Meaning of Smekday" for the National Time Capsule contest, she's not sure where to begin. When her mom started telling everyone about the messages aliens were sending through a mole on the back of her neck? Maybe on Christmas Eve, when huge, bizarre spaceships descended on the Earth and the aliens - called Boov - abducted her mother? Or when the Boov declared Earth a colony, renamed it "Smekland" (in honor of glorious Captain Smek), and forced all Americans to relocate to Florida via rocketpod? In any case, Gratuity's story is much, much bigger than the assignment. It involves her unlikely friendship with a renegade Boov mechanic named J.Lo.; a futile journey south to find Gratuity's mother at the Happy Mouse Kingdom; a cross-country road trip in a hovercar called Slushious; and an outrageous plan to save the Earth from yet another alien invasion.

Activity Day

I hope you had fun at Activity Day. I did! Someone said they wished that one of the centers was a reading station where kids could go somewhere quiet and cool and read for a little while. This made me wonder:

Best Book of the Year Award

Think back about what you read this past school year. What was the best book you read or had read aloud to you?

I have to say...the book The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman kept me on the edge of my seat! It was spooky and mysterious and funny all at the same time. I also loved Moxy Maxwell Does Not Love Stuart Little by  Peggy Gifford and Stuart Little by EB White.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about Harry Potter. I think you're right...I need to start at the beginning! Look at me, I'm all ready for summer!

Somebody also suggested that I watch the movies too. Good idea! I think that will be my reward at the end of the summer after I've finished the series.

It's Summer!

Isn't summer great? What is the first book you are planning to read as soon as vacation starts?


What's your favorite place to read?

My goal this summer is to finally finish reading the Harry Potter series! Can you believe I've only read the first three? I'm ashamed to admit it! Do you think I should go back and reread the first three books, or can I pick up with "Goblet of Fire"?

By far...my favorite reading spot is the hammock in my back yard.
