Remember to go to Seymour Library!

Greetings! I went to Storytime on the Lawn and Seymour on Tuesday, and it was so much fun! CAb you guess who the guest readers were? Cinderella and Prince Charming! They read Cinderella (of course!) and How to be Friends with a Dragon, plus they sang a few songs. There were probably over 100 kids there, and I saw a few Herman friends too!

Be sure to check out these upcoming events!
  • Tuesday, August 6: Storytime with Captain Jack the Pirate @ 11AM (Remember to bring a blanket or chairs to sit on)

  • Tuesday, Aug. 13: Storytime on the Lawn, 11 a.m. Guest reader: Sen. John DeFrancisco.

  • Every Wednesday, All Day: Drop-in Crafts in the Children's room!

I can't wait to see my Herman friends at the Library!

Seasonal Genres

Hi! I've been out of town for the past month, but I'm back and ready to blog! I was thinking about my reading habits and something made me wonder: I noticed that during the summer time, I usually read funny books or realistic fiction books. But, in the fall, I like reading horror books. Are my reading preferences determined by the seasons? Does Halloween get me in the mood for scary books? Is summer just a happy, fun time, so in turn I read happy fun books? I'm not sure about winter and spring though. Maybe I'll record the books I read over the next year and see if I notice any trends.

Do the seasons affect what genres you read? Think back during the past year. Did you read a certain type of book based on the weather or holidays?

Happy Reading!

Summer is Here!

Hey Everybody! Welcome to summer vay-cay! So...what's the first book that you'll be diving into this summer? I'm starting my summer off with "The Sea of Monsters" by Rick Riordan. Its the second book in the Percy Jackson series. I just love learning about all of the different Greek Gods, Monsters and Heroes!

Happy Reading!

Will you blog with me?

Welcome to the Official Herman Avenue Library Blog!

Hey kids! Its me, Mrs. A. I thought this blog might be a good place for us to talk about what we're reading during summer vacation. I'll try to post once a week. Sometimes I'll add questions for you, sometimes I'll tell you about what I'm reading. Here are a few ground rules:

  • No last names please! (For privacy reasons...remember anybody in the world can visit this blog!) You can write Julia A. for instance.
  • Only write about what you're reading or answers to questions I pose.
  • Please be kind and respectful of all of our readers.
Hope to "see" you on the World Wide Web!

Emotions

I started thinking about something this morning: Why do people enjoy reading books that make them sad or scared? Tear-Jerker books are very popular and some people love reading books that make them cry! Thriller or horror books are one of the most popular genres; some people love books that give them nightmares! In general, we don't like feeling sad or scared, so why do we read these types of books on purpose?

Favorite Character

HI! I hope everyone is having a good start to their summer vacations! I've been reading everyday, have you? I have been reading a lot of non fiction, does anyone have a good fiction book they can recommend to me?

Question:
Who is your favorite character from a book and why?

My Answer: Ender Wiggin from the  Ender's Game sci-fi series by Orson Scott Card. The series takes place in the future when families are only allowed to have two children. Ender's family already has two kids, and when he comes along, he is a "third". "Thirds" are undesirable, second class citizens. Luckily for Ender, he is gifted and has a special talent for flying space ships and defeating enemy "aliens". Although the fate is often placed on Ender's small shoulders, he remains a sensitive and caring person, and grows up to be a kind person, and a leader.  Attention 6th graders: I am already planning on making Ender's Game our first book club selection for the year. Are you ready?!   --Mrs. A

Welcome to Summer 2011!

Hello! If this is your first time to my blog...welcome! If you wrote to me last summer and plan on doing so again this summer...welcome back!  Check back every few weeks because I will have a question for you to answer! If you've read a cool book recently, we'd love to hear about it!

Remember, only sign your first name and last initial! (Example: Dave A.)

Here is your first Blog Question for the summer!

Do you read more or less frequently during the summertime?

Mrs. A's Answer: I definitely read more often during the summer than during school. During the summer I am less busy and have more time to devote to reading for pleasure. During the school year, most of the books I read are kids books (which I love!) to help students find books in the library. In the summer though, I have more time to read books just for me!
